A map boss is a type of map encounter that can occur in a map which adds a difficult unique monster. On the Atlas, locations with map bosses are marked with an icon. Maps without this icon will not have a boss appear.

Each map area has a specific boss that will appear if the map contains a boss. The combinations can be found in List of maps.

Mechanics

In maps containing a map boss, the map boss must be defeated for the map to count as completed.

Citadel bosses are special map bosses based on the act bosses of the campaign: Count Geonor, Jamanra, the Abomination, and Doryani. Citadel bosses drop Crisis Fragments, items used to access The Arbiter of Ash, the pinnacle atlas encounter.
