Magma Barrier is an attackskill that infuses your shield with magma. A magma-infused shield releases a spray of magma when struck, damaging enemies. This effect has a short cooldown between uses. Magma Barrier requires an equipped shield.
The attack damage % used by the Magma Spray is derived explicitly from the base off hand fire damage inherent to the gem itself. No amount of damage on a weapon in the main hand will contribute to Magma Spray damage.
Focusing on the Armour value on your shield is one of the methods for scaling Magma Spray damage.
Passive tree nodes that contain the text X% increased Defences from Equipped Shield such as Towering Shield, Core of the Guardian, Spiked Shield, and Flashy Deflection do not impact Magma Spray damage. Instead, they impact the final Armour value added to the player rather than the implicit Armour value of the shield itself.
Using Resonating Shield counts as raising your Shield for the purposes of activating Magma Barrier, infusing your shield with magma during the first 0.5 seconds of the animation. Conversely using Shield Charge does not count as raising your Shield.
