Lost Towers (sometimes referred to as Precursor Towers) are nodes on the Atlas that can reveal a large area on the Atlas around it once completed. Additionally, after traversing it successfully, precursor tablets can be inserted into a tower to add additional Encounters to, surrounding maps. If multiple towers are close enough together it is possible to overlap a single map with several tablet effects.
