Eternal Life is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Lich that prevents your life from being changed while you have energy shield.

Mechanics

This passive skill prevents your current life from being changed. This can be both a benefit and a detriment combined with other mechanics:

  • #% of Damage taken bypasses Energy Shield: The damage you would have taken to life that bypasses energy shield is ignored until energy shield is fully depleted, effectively granting an equivalent less damage taken modifier. For example, if 30% of damage bypassed energy shield, you would take 30% less damage until energy shield is fully depleted. If a single hit deals enough damage to fully deplete energy shield, the remainder of the damage is fully taken to life.
  • Life loss: As long as the player has energy shield, effects that cause you to lose life are ignored, such as Event Horizon's Lose 3% of maximum Life and Energy Shield when you use a Chaos Skill or Death Articulated's Lose 5% of maximum Life per second.
  • Life recovery: The player is unable to recover life while you have energy shield, such as if you depleted all ES, took damage to life, then recovered some ES[1]. Although this can be used strategically to maintain low life status (e.g. for Pain Attunement), it also means there is no way to benefit from life recovery while you have energy shield.
  • Life costs: The character is unable to use any skill or effect that requires you to spend or sacrifice life in order to occur, such as using Lifetap or Blood Magic to give a skill a life cost, or Demon Stitcher's Sacrifice #% of Life to gain that much Energy Shield when you Cast a Spell effect.[2]
