Unlike Path of Exile 1, item sockets in Path of Exile 2 hold runes instead of gems. Socketed runes will add enchantment modifiers to their items, granting offensive modifiers to martial weapons and defences modifiers to armour. Once socketed, runes cannot be removed. Body armours and two-handed weapons can have 2 maximum sockets, while other gear can have 1.
