Item sockets (also known as rune sockets) are slots found on equipment such as weapons or armour or into which certain items can be placed.
Mechanics
Item sockets can hold runes, soul cores, or talismans, which add an enchantment to the item. They will grant offensive modifiers to martial weapons, defensive modifiers to armour, and caster-related modifiers to wands and staves. Once socketed, the item cannot be removed, but can be overwritten by another socketable item.
Sockets can be increased through the use of an Artificer's Orb. Body armours and two-handed weapons can have up to 2 maximum sockets, while other types of armour and weapons can have up to 1. Some unique items have additional sockets beyond the normal limit.
An additional item socket can also be added as result of corruption, such as using a Vaal Orb, bypassing the usual limit.
