Item sockets are slots found on equipment such as armours or martial weapons into which certain items can be placed.
Mechanics
Item sockets can hold runes or soul cores, which add an enchantment to the item. Both runes and soul cores grant offensive modifiers to martial weapons and defensive modifiers to armour. Once socketed, runes and soul cores cannot be removed.
Body armours and two-handed weapons can have up to 2 maximum sockets, while other types of armour and martial weapons can have up to 1.
