This is a guide on the subject of summarising map layouts and encounters.

This guide is meant to give a general layout/type of each map along with notable mob types or encounters.

Abyss

  • Cave map type
  • Medium-width corridors that go in random directions
  • Spiders spawn from the sides of the map randomly
  • Boss is Zar Wali, The Bone Tyrant

Augury

  • Indoor temple map with a locked inner sanctum
  • Must pull 3 levers to open the middle of the map to fight rare mobs
  • The 3 levers are in the middle of each side that you did not spawn on
  • You cannot cancel pulling the levers - make sure you kill all mobs around them first

Backwash

  • Forest map type
  • Islands connected with bridges
  • Lots of tree obstacles
  • Boss is Yaota, the Loathsome

Bloodwood

  • Forest map type
  • Fairly linear
  • Long winding corridor
  • Can easily miss rares if you don't check all sides as you go down the corridor

Blooming Field

  • Forest map type
  • Big square
  • Lots of roots and trees obstructing movement
  • Boss is the multi-phase crow boss with the bell

Burial Bog

  • Swamp map type
  • Long winding map with large obstacles along the way
  • Similar to Strand in PoE 1
  • Boss is Grudgelash, Vile Ent

Cenotes

  • Beach type map
  • Fairly open layout

Channel

  • Indoor temple type map
  • Has a chest that, when opened, turns a lot of statues into mobs

Creek

  • Linear map with wide sides
  • Large tree and rock obstacles, but there are large open areas as well
  • Boss is the big chainsaw guy

Crypt

  • Mausoleum map type
  • Long narrow corridors
  • Boss is the first floor sanctum boss from PoE 1

Decay

Deserted

  • Desert type map
  • Long linear-ish map

Forge

  • Long, straight hallways
  • Looks like crucible maps from PoE1

Fortress

  • Circular map with big open areas
  • Boss is Pirasha, The Forgotten Prisoner, which is the map version of Balbala, the Traitor, but the arena is a lot larger

Gothic City

  • City type map
  • Wide connecting corridors
  • Spawns next to Iron citadels

Hidden Grotto

  • Cave type map
  • Circular shape

Hive

  • Desert type map
  • Lots of rocks and jagged edges to get caught on or stuck

Iron Citadel

  • Maze type map
  • Area is like the final area of Act 1
  • Boss is the act 1 boss

Lofty Summit

  • Winter type map
  • Fairly linear, but lots of back tracking to fully complete the map
  • Long corridors that are wide and narrow at parts

Mineshaft

  • Cave type map
  • A maze of hallways

Mire

  • Swamp map type
  • Thin bridges connecting small islands
  • Boss is Rinoa, Winter's Cackle

Oasis

  • Desert map type
  • Long linear corridor

Penitentiary

  • Act 1 town type
  • Boss is the Executioner
  • Map is next to the Iron Citadel


Ravine

  • Castle map type
  • Long linear map with little to no obstacles

Rustbowl

  • Fairly linear map with wide sides
  • Boss is Gozen, Rebellious Rustlord

Sandspit

  • Beach map type
  • Long linear map just like strand in PoE 1

Savannah

  • Desert map type
  • Open layout with long brick walls throughout
  • Boss is the desert boss from act 2

Seepage

  • Indoor temple map with long corridors

Slick

  • Castle type map
  • Long, wide corridors
  • Is generally linear but has large tangents

Spider Woods

  • Forest type map
  • Linear-ish, but mostly wide open space

Steaming Springs

  • Beach map type
  • Open layout in a square with lots of obstacles
  • Boss is Manassa, The Serpent Queen

Steppe

  • Forest/plain map type
  • Open layout in a square

Sulphuric Caverns

  • Cave map type
  • Linear-ish map but you have to traverse the sides quite a bit
  • Boss is the dual boss with the beast and the mage

Sump

  • Forest map type
  • Circular map with lots of narrow passages
  • The boss is the witch that flies around on a broom
